Dothan Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday the nation remembered the service and sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In Dothan hundreds of people took to the streets to honor Dr. King's legacy at the city's annual MLK March.

The march started at Piggly Wiggly and ended at First Missionary Baptist Church.

Parade participant Franklin Jones said,  Monday's march was not only about honoring Dr. King's life, but also about educating the youth on the historical significance of MLK Day.

"This is just historical teaching for our children because most of the young adults don't anything about the civil rights movement. They weren't born to experience any of it.  So today we let our children now what marching was all about. Some Dr. King's greatest success came from his marches in the 50's and 60's," explained Jones.

Dothan's MLK march ended with a memorial program at First Missionary, where Rodney Smith was the keynote speaker.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is always celebrated on t he third Monday of January, even though Dr. King's was born on January 15th.

If alive today, King would be 84 years old.
