Historic Day For Trojan Hoops Comes Thursday

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: January 8, 2013
Thursday marks a historic day for both the Troy men's and women's basketball programs.  Both teams are slated to take on ULM at Trojan Arena, with the women tipping off at 12 p.m. and the men at 6 p.m.  Tickets are still available by calling the Troy ticket office at 1-877-878-WINS (9467) or visiting TroyTrojans.com.

If fans can't make it to Trojan Arena, both games will air on the Sun Belt Network, marking the first network games ever in Trojan Arena.  Both games will air on CSS/CST throughout the Southeast, as well as on ESPN3.

The special afternoon time for the women's game allows for local elementary, middle and high school students to visit Trojan Arena as part of their school day.

Thursday night's men's game marks a very special occasion as Troy University will name the playing surface at Trojan Arena "Court Maestri" after legendary men's basketball head coach Don Maestri.

Maestri, in his 32nd season at the helm of the Trojans, is the winningest coach in program history with 494 career victories.  He has also won seven conference titles and has been named coach of the year seven times.

The official ceremony to name the court will be held at approximately 5:45 p.m.

The Troy men (6-10, 1-4) come in after a thrilling 67-64 win over UALR at Trojan Arena on Saturday night.  ULM (3-8, 2-3) is coming off of win at North Texas on Saturday.

Senior Emil Jones leads the Trojans in scoring at 10.1 points per game as Troy sits seventh in the nation, turning the ball over just 10.6 times per game.

The Troy women (3-11, 0-5) are looking to snap a four-game losing skid against a ULM squad (2-12, 0-5) that has lost six straight.

The Trojans fell at home to UALR on Saturday, 71-50, despite holding a halftime lead over the West Division leaders.  Troy averages 75.7 points per game, tops in the Sun Belt conference and 14th in the nation, with freshman Ashley Beverly-Kelley leading the way at 13.0 points per game.
