This is the peak season for house fires and Dothan firefighters are reporting a busier than normal season.
They say there is a common thread in many house fires this time of year--they could have been prevented.
"Most of the fires that we encounter deal with space heaters, electrical cords and candles," explained Capt. Mike Shiver, with the Dothan Police Department. "People leave candles up and forget to blow them out or get items too close to them."
Another reason house fires are more likely during the holidays is all of the holiday cooking.
Capt. Shiver said people forget to turn off the oven.
The best way to keep this from happening is to set a dependable timer.
Capt. Shiver also suggested a well regulated smoke detector.
The fire department will come out to install and check people's smoke detectors for free.
