Former Teacher Sent To Prison

By: Ken Curtis
Updated: December 15, 2012

A former Rehobeth School teacher who admitted having sex with a student was sentenced Wednesday to 36 years in prison.  Robert Lee Michel, 44, pleaded guilty in October to violating the School Sex Employee Act passed during the 2010 state legislative session. He received eight years on each of three counts.

Additionally, Michel admitted to four counts of possessing child porn, charges stemming from what investigators termed a large number of images found during a search of his personal computer.  Circuit Judge Butch Binford sentenced him to three years on each of four counts.  The judge ordered the sentences to be served consecutively.

Michel was arrested in April after he fled the 16-year old student's home when the teen's mom returned home unexpectedly and found Michael and her daughter engaged in sexual activity.  Sheriff Andy Hughes said Michel ran from the home with no clothes on. He was captured a short time later--clad in only trash bags.

Michel was terminated from his job with the Houston County Board of Education.
