Wood, Helen Richards, age 84, of the Richards Crossroads community in Barbour County Alabama, passed peacefully away at her home on December 6, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Helen was born in 1928 to Annie Lois Lucas Richards and Thomas Angus Richards. She was a graduate of Baker Hill School; received a B.S. Degree in Science and a Master's Degree in Zoology and Botany from Auburn University in an era when few women had the opportunity to attend college. Helen's mother moved to Auburn, AL with Helen and her Sister, Eva, and managed a boarding house for students to earn the money to allow her daughters to attend and graduate from college. Helen continued her education at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She taught Science in the Jefferson County School system for 30 years, from 1953 until 1983. Her students still remember the wild flower project she had every class complete and many have told her they kept their projects as keepsakes even as adults.
Upon retirement, Helen and husband, Glynn, moved back to Richards Crossroads where she lived for the remainder of her days.
Helen was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where she served as Church Treasurer for many years. She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association; National Education Association; Alabama Education Association; and Order of the Eastern Star, Eufaula Chapter Number 462. In the past few years, she spent 2 or 3 days each week playing cards with friends at the Washington Street United Methodist Church and those days were the highlight of her week.
At home, Helen loved growing roses, and just about anything else in her numerous raised beds; riding her ATV around the farm; and picking up pecans from trees on the property where she and her family have lived since the early 1800s. She was a lover of all animals including her dogs, cats, goats, and donkey.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Glynn Basil Wood, her brother, Thomas A. Richards, Sr. and sister-in-law, Laura Smith Richards. Helen is survived by her son, Allen Wood, and daughter-in-law, Deborah Wood; Grandchildren, Tarah Wood, Amanda Pair, and Matthew Morgan; and great-granddaughter, Ava Elizabeth Pair. Also, Sister, Eva Christenberry and husband, Curtis Christenberry of Auburn, AL, and 12 nieces and 3 nephews.
In the past few years, Helen loved spending time with her niece Shirley Christenberry, playing cards, learning to use her computer, and cruising the lake in Shirley's boat. She was lovingly cared for by niece, Lorene Richards Jones, and husband, Bill Jones, during the time that her son, Allen, was serving our country in the U.S. Army.
Visitation will be at Holman-Abbeville Mortuary on Saturday, December 8th from 3:30 until 5:30 P.M. and a graveside service will be held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetery, near Eufaula, on Sunday, December 9th at 2:00 P.M.
Flowers will be accepted but should one wish to make a charitable contribution in lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, c/o Virginia Wells, 2421 County Road 79 South, Eufaula, AL 36027; Washington Street United Methodist Church, Eufaula, AL; or the charity of one's choice.
