After seven months of back and forth debate and public hearings, Dothan's sign ordinance is still being hammered out.

The proposed sign ordinance would have required businesses to certify their signs weren't too bright.

Because of potential costs associated with the certification process the planning commission changed the requirement.

Another problem discussed was temporary signs

Under the ordinance business owners can only use temporary signs like this one five times a year and no more than 30 days at a time.

City Planning Director Todd McDonald said the new sign ordinance is a way to clean up the city and limit driver distractions.

"There's always going to be a rub between some folks who want to do whatever they want to do with signage verses what is reasonable and within public safety " explained McDonald.

Other provisions would require all window signs to not exceed 50 percent of the glass.

Political signs can't be attached to trees or buildings,

The ordinance would also change how far signs can be from property limits.
