Updated: August 1, 2012
Attorney General Luther Strange announced the arrest today of a recently retired Troy police officer for multiple sex crimes against a child victim.

Willie Toney, 61, was arrested this afternoon by agents of the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Pike County Sheriff's Office, and taken to the Pike County Jail.

Attorney General Strange's Office presented evidence to a Pike County grand jury, resulting in Toney's indictment* today. Specifically, the indictment charges Toney with one count of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy, and two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, all of which were committed against a child victim aged less than 12 years old.

No further information about the investigation or about Toney's alleged crimes other than that stated in the indictment may be released at this time.

If convicted, Toney faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment for each count of first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy, which are class A felonies, and up to 20 years for each count of first-degree sexual abuse, which is a class B felony.

The case is being prosecuted by the Assistant Attorneys General Kelly Hawkins and Stephanie Billingslea of the Attorney General's Criminal Trials Division, and was investigated by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

*An indictment is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
