It passed the state legislature unanimously. Now a measure honoring a Houston county hero is law.
A bill in honor of fallen Marine Lance Corporal Jason Barfield was signed by Governor Robert Bentley Thursday.
The law exempts wages earned by a service member killed in a designated combat zone, as well as the wages earned by their spouse.
Ray and Kelli Barfield, Jason's parents, say this new law will make it easier for other families during their time of loss.
"You're not really thinking straight on everything and it's just one more hurdle to get over," said Ray Barfield. "For the families not to have to go over that hurdle and not worry about possibly paying taxes due is the last thing that the state can do to honor their fallen hero."
Senator Harri Anne Smith sponsored the bill.
She said that the state will soon try to amend the bill to include all income, not just income from the military.
