A forest fire in Santa Rosa County forced people to leave their homes and find alternate routes to get home today.

Several roads were shut down earlier this afternoon, just south of I-10, near Avalon Blvd., where the fire started .

The fire is now about 250 acres and about 70 percent is contained, but the forest service says they could be fighting this thing for days.

The forest service believes The fire was started by a tractor. But it quickly turned into this, the wind and dry conditions making it spread quickly.

"Because of this wind it's creating separate fires, not one large."

It didn't take long for The Avalon RV Park to fill with smoke, and flames not far away, several owners evacuated, while others sprayed theirs down with water to prevent them from catching fire.

"I didn't know."

"It was this big and this close."
"I thought it wasn't that close, you can see the fire rift there burning."

Just spraying it to make sure the ash doesn't start something."

Seven homes voluntarily evacuated, a helicopter was dropping 300 gallons of water on the flames every few minutes to help those on the ground battling from another angle.

"It's the fuels, this area is different than anything in our three county area.."
