A man was taken into custody Friday morning after leading deputies on a chase through the Garden District of Dothan. The pursuit ended when the man chased jumped from the car and ran into a house on Chinook Street.
Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes said the chase began near the intersection of West Main Street and Ross Clark Circle. "Investigators from the Sheriff's Office and Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board had information (Bernard Blackmon) had crack cocaine," said Hughes during an impromptu press conference at the scene. The sheriff said Blackmon, believed to be 25 years old, wrecked his car just before jumping out and running into a nearby home belonging to a relative. He was taken into custody inside the home.
Drug agents and other officers were seen picking up what appeared to be a bag of illegal drugs from the roadway. Hughes said Blackmon also threw out a handgun during the pursuit in which no officer was injured. The pistol is believed to have been stolen in Enterprise.
Blackmon was treated by paramedics at the scene then taken to the hospital with what Hughes described as "minor injuries." He was then taken to the Houston County Jail where he was booked on several felony charges.
