Governor
Robert Bentley on
Tuesday returned House Bill 360 to the Alabama Legislature with an executive amendment that gives local school more flexibility in their scheduling.
The
executive amendment gives school systems the choice of opting out of new school
calendar guidelines established by HB 360. At the same time, the amendment
allows schools to enjoy the flexibility measures detailed in the bill.
The
measure was passed in an effort to boost tourism in Alabama. It mandated schools not begin until at least
two weeks before Memorial Day and end by May 24.
"I
believe local school systems know what's best for the students they serve, and
I believe local school boards should be able to establish their own school
calendars," Governor Bentley said. "If a local system determines that the new
calendar guidelines are not in the best interest of local students, my
amendment would give that system the ability to provide notice to the State
Superintendent of Education and opt out of those guidelines."
School
systems, including Dothan's, have been worked to revise schedules in order to
meet the criteria set forth by the bill.
Now, some of them may not have to change anything. Most superintendents had resigned themselves
to revamp the schedule but now may have a reprieve. Many planned to add a few
days to each day in order not to disturb in-term breaks such as Christmas and
Spring breaks.
Members of the Legislature will now consider the amended version of the legislation.
