Commissioner John McMillan has announced
that the two State Farmers’ Markets owned and operated by the Alabama Department
of Agriculture & Industries will cease operation due to budget cuts. The
closures will be effective March 1, according to Comm. McMillan.
“Due to the fact that these two markets, both located in Montgomery, have been operating at a significant loss, we have no choice but to close them in an effort to save taxpayer dollars to meet our other obligations,” McMillan said.
With the department facing a budget cut of at least $2
million, McMillan said there was no alternative but to close the unprofitable
markets located on West Fairview
Avenue and at the State Fairgrounds on Federal Drive. He
added that the closings will result in considerable annual
savings.
“We will evaluate the best use of these two properties and will announce our plans moving forward,” McMillan said.
