FLU SEASON IS HERE

Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Virginia and New York have all reported significant numbers of flu cases already this season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. On average, 36 thousand people in the United States die each year from complications of influenza and 200 thousand people with the flu are hospitalized. Flu symptoms include fever above 101 degrees which lasts 3-4 days, chest discomfort, aches and pains (often severe), headaches, tiredness, weakness lasting as long as 2-3 weeks, extreme exhaustion, coughs and sniffles. SAMC reminds everyone of the importance of getting a flu shot to help reduce their chances of catching the wintertime malady.

BLOOD DRIVE AT SAMC

Please join the hospital and LifeSouth Community Blood Bank on Wednesday, Jan. 19 to donate the gift of life. The drive will run from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the hospital’s Auditorium Conference Room near the Terrace Cafeteria in the basement level. The public is invited to participate in this event. Blood donations received through LifeSouth remain in the area to serve the needs of local residents needing blood or blood products.

SAMC MAKES PLANS FOR HEART HEALTH EVENT

SAMC will present its annual Hearts ‘N’ Motion (formerly known as “Day of Dance”) community activity for heart health on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2008 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m at the Dothan Civic Center. Whether it’s dancing, exercising, eating right or managing your weight; Hearts ‘N’ Motion has something for everyone—from the young to the young at heart. Many lives have been touched during the last six years through this healthy event. This special day provides not only FREE health screenings, but fun activities, cooking demonstrations and more for the entire family.

REDUCE RISK FOR HEART DISEASE WITH SCREENINGS

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., yet many people don't realize they’re at risk. Individuals can test their risk for heart disease at SAMC’s Heart and Vascular Center. The Center offers several simple screenings such as carotid artery ultrasound, peripheral artery disease studies, abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound and cholesterol/blood sugar tests. Beyond these screenings, factors like weight, family history, and blood pressure, can help predict future heart problems. Schedule your heart and vascular screening today!
