A woman from Madison has been killed at a safari park in northern California. The victim is 70 year Gayle Falgoust. She and her granddaughter were on a trip together. The two were sleeping when a wind storm knocked a tree down on to their tent Tuesday night.

It was supposed to be a bonding trip, a grandmother- granddaughter camp out at the “Safari West Animal Preserve". Falgoust was killed. Her 7 year old grandchild suffered minor injuries. "There was a tent next door with a father and son and they heard the initial crash and heard the screaming." said Capt. Matt McCaffrey with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. "They went out their door and saw what happened. Luckily they had a pair of scissors in their tent and they were able to cut through the canvas of the tent to get in and take the 7-year-old girl out. She is very shaken, obviously a very traumatic situation, but she is okay. She was unhurt physically"

Falgoust's neighbors knew she was heading out of town, but they were shocked when they learned what had happened.

“I think life just shocks you when the time comes, and sympathy goes out to her family,” said Dale Davis.

Falgoust lived on West Lake Circle in Madison. She grew up outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is a hurricane Katrina evacuee who moved to Madison to be close to her son.  She traveled often to visit family in other parts of the country.

She was always concerned about her neighbors and very polite, and I had the privilege of taking her to the airport several times early in the morning,” said Dale Davis.

On this occasion Falgoust was on a group tour of the Western United States. Authorities say after the tree fell,, a father and son sleeping nearby were able to cut the little girl out of the tent, she is now with her father in Santa Rosa.

“I am just very shocked about the whole situation. She was a really wonderful and nice neighbor and I really hate that this happened,” said Sam Davis.

Funeral Arrangement for Falgoust are still being discussed.  We will bring you more information as soon as it becomes available.
