It's down to the little things at Dothan High School. Maintenance workers, teachers and students are getting the school's newest addition ready for the start of a new year.

It's a lot of work. Just ask art teacher Christopher Payne. "I had to move my art class from the second story of the old building down to the first story if this building. I had the hallway lined with all my material and I couln't figure out how I was going to get it down here," Payne said.

He was able to find that help. It came from nearly a thousand miles away.

"It means a lot that they have taken the time to put the money into it and say I'm going to take part of my summer vacation and fly down to Alabama to help others," Service Club Sponsor Jennifer Walker said.

The students are part of a high school volunteer group from Maryland. They spend much of the last school year raising money to travel to volunteer somewhere. That somewhere ended up being Dothan.

"We're really excited to come. We were counting down the days. We all love volunteering or we wouldn't be here," volunteer Kara Tolson said.

"It makes you feel better when you volunteer, especially when people appreciate it," volunteer Brooke Gowallis said.

There are plenty at DHS who appreciate it -- including Mr. Payne. "It teaches them that life is not just about themselves but about what you do for others," Payne continued.

It's a lesson learned before school even starts.
