Dorothy Symonds

Dorothy Symonds, a resident of Ozark, passed away on Friday, July 9, 2010 at Dale Medical Center. She was 85.A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Ozark, AL with Dr. Christian Eckert and Dr. Jason Thrower officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Music Fund, 167 E. Broad St., Ozark, AL, 36360.
Ms. Symonds was born on June 20, 1925 in New York. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and a Masters of Music from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, IL. She taught Voice and Music Literature at Moody Bible Institute of Chicago for 30 years, and was the Chair of the Music Department for the final 10 years of her career. Ms. Symonds was the President of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) for 3 years. She will be remembered by audiences in various parts of the country for her “Madam Lasagna” performances.

Survivors include her nieces, Louise French, Laurie Kennedy, Sandy Huppert and Karen Steiner; and her nephews James Rogers, Williams Rogers, Michael Foley and Charles Foley.
