Sherman Obie Chancey

Mr. Sherman Obie Chancey of County Road 658, Samson, AL went
home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, June 22, 2010. He was 74.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 25, in the
Piney Grove Assembly of God Church with Rev. Garry Winstead and Rev.
Calvin Sherrouse officiating. Mr. Chancey will be
placed into the church one hour prior to service time. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Geneva
directing. The family will receive friends at
the funeral home in Geneva, Thursday, June 24, from 6 until 8 p.m.
Mr. Chancey, affectionately known as “Coot” and “Pa,” was
born June 2, 1936, in Holmes County, Florida to the late William Obie
and Minnie Lee Hood Chancey. He was a member of
the Coffee County Cattlemen’s Association and Young Farmer’s
Association. In 2008, he was honored as Farmer of
the Year. After 44 years of service he retired
from Micolas Mills in Opp. He was a very
dedicated member of Piney Grove Assembly of God Church for a number of
years where he currently served on the board.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Winnie Ruth Brownell, a
brother, Jonathan Chancey, and a half brother, Paul Hood, all preceded
him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years,
Grace Wood Chancey; two sons: Jack (Kaye) Chancey, Billy (Angie)
Chancey, all of Samson, AL; one daughter, Amy (Joseph) Bess, Kinston,
AL; three brothers: D.S. “Bud” Chancey, Daleville, AL, Earl (Marie)
Chancey, Defuniak Springs, FL, Charlie (Gail) Chancey, Samson, AL; four
sisters: Elizabeth Harcus, Jacksonville, FL, Linda Gill, Defuniak
Springs, FL, Juanita (Albert) Wood, Elba, AL, Mary (Randy) Lyle,
Huntsville, AL; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several
nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.
The church board of Piney Grove Assembly of God will serve as honorary pallbearers.
